Biography of Javi Garrido

The young Spanish player, a passionate fan of Atlético de Madrid from a young age, was born and grew up in Córdoba, where he combined padel with football. In fact, as he has acknowledged in several interviews, he began playing the 20×10 sport at the age of seven but did not like it initially, as he would escape from training sessions to play football.

Eventually, he got hooked on padel, which led him to become one of the pearls of this sport in the Spanish scene. In the junior stage, he swept through Andalusia, leading all the regional rankings in the children’s category together with his partner Jesús Moya at just 14 years old.

His talent did not go unnoticed by brands, as Star Vie made a strong bet on him. Over the years, his potential and progression were not hindered, as in 2015, at just 15 years old, he began competing in the preliminary phases of the World Padel Tour tournaments.

In 2017, he exploded on the blue court circuit after having completed all the stages in the junior categories, proclaiming himself world champion twice and Spanish champion four times. He competed alongside Javier Valdés, Javier González Barahona, and later with Gonzalo Rubio, with whom he managed to break through the preliminary phases to qualify for a final draw of the World Padel Tour, finishing the season ranked 62nd.

A year later, he moved to Madrid on a scholarship to pursue university studies in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences while competing in the WPT. There, he continued his growth as a professional player, partnering with Tito Allemandi and Martín Di Nenno. With the latter, he managed to qualify for his first WPT semifinals at the Alicante Open in 2019 at the age of 18.

In 2020, he gained significant experience by competing alongside his mentor Juani Mieres, who years later would become his coach. The following season, he performed at an excellent level as he settled in the upper part of the ranking alongside Juan Cruz Belluati, claimed the Spanish championship, and also added his first two WPT titles with Lucho Capra and Mike Yanguas: the Lerma Challenger and the Albacete Challenger.

In 2022, the player from Córdoba made a risky move, as he opted to play alongside Brazilian Lucas Campagnolo, who was coming back from a complicated injury and was struggling to find a reliable partner. In their first tournament together, they surprised everyone by reaching the final of the Miami Open, which they lost to a high-profile pair formed by Fernando Belasteguín and Arturo Coello.

That same year, he managed to lift a Challenger title (again in Albacete) with ‘Campa’ and had the opportunity to finish the season alongside Fede Chingotto after the shakeup of pairs that resulted from the breakup of the world’s number two pair, formed by Martín Di Nenno and Paquito Navarro.

Last season was his best season on a personal level, as he acknowledged in an interview with Marca, despite sharing the court with up to six players: Fede Chingotto, Jon Sanz, Javi Rico, Pablo Lijó, Lucas Campagnolo, and Momo González.

Beyond the irregularity regarding partners, he managed to be a fixture in the quarterfinals (qualifying on twelve occasions), even reaching the semifinals in three events. This allowed him to finish among the top 16 players in the ranking and play the Master Final in Barcelona, a dream he had set out to achieve since he started playing padel as a child.

His good performance made him a sought-after player for this 2024 season, during which he has decided to join another young talent, Mike Yanguas, to form a very dangerous duo in the aerial game that seeks to start reaching finals and lifting titles in the medium and long term.

Best points of Javi Garrido

Javi Garrido is a player who stands out for his aerial game and physical ability to cover gaps on the court and win points on the counterattack. He is solid and bases his tactic on setting up the point to force the opponent to hit a poor-quality lob and finish defining the point through the smash.

He always tries to control the pace of the game from the backhand to stay close to the net due to the threat his hitting poses to opponents. Additionally, he has a great reach that allows him to generate many attacking situations in which he does not feel the pressure of having to define to take the point.

Wilson, Official Sponsor of Javi Garrido

The Andalusian backhand was linked to Star Vie since 2010, when the CEO of the Spanish brand, Jorge Gómez de la Vega, decided to start sponsoring him after watching him play a tournament in Córdoba at just ten years old. However, this season he decided to end his association with Star Vie to join Wilson.

The American brand has bet on the potential of Javi Garrido, who this season competes on the world’s best stages with the Blade Pro V2 model:

Javi Garrido’s new racket offers a dual impact of light power and effect thanks to its strong composition of carbon fiber face and textured surface. It is designed for advanced players seeking a versatile racket that enables them to generate danger in the offensive zone.

It is made of a Soft EVA rubber which provides a medium touch and comes with a new distribution of holes that allows wrapping the ball well to give it the right direction. Moreover, its striking heart design helps better distribute the weight of the racket to dominate the defensive facet and key shots like lobs or trays.

Javi Garrido’s Achievements

The player from Córdoba already knows what it’s like to lift World Padel Tour titles in the Challenger category, which he dominated during 2021 and 2022 with various partners. However, he still has the mission to debut in Premier Padel, the new circuit that governs professional padel worldwide.

This season, he will attempt to break that barrier alongside his partner Mike Yanguas and receive for the first time the call from the Spanish National Team to make his debut in the World Padel Championship, which will be held from October 28 to November 2.
